چکیده

Driving a car involves considering it at diierent spatio-temporal scales, and somehow leads to behavior such as the parallel parking maneuver, the three-point turn, free Euclidean driving in a desert, following a road, and translationally passing other vehicles at high speed. In the study of autonomous systems, it is desirable to nd a representation in which such diierent behaviors of a single system can be related to each other, and to nd precisely how and under what conditions a change of representation and corresponding choice of motions occurs. In this paper, we formulate an abstraction mechanism based on approximations of ows of commutators of vector elds. We apply it to the goal-directed motion of a car and show how the environmental constraints induce, through this abstraction mechanism, a recognizable hierarchy of descriptions of the car's motion. Imagine that you are planning to visit some friends that live in B. You decide to go from A (your town) to B by car. At you kitchen table, you decide which route to take, using maps of rather coarse scale, choosing the quickest or most scenic route. You then go to the garage, maneuver the car onto the driveway and turn onto the road. You take your favorite route through town to the beginning of the freeway or scenic route, and drive along, passing other cars. When you arrive at B, some planning through that town is required to nd your friends' house. You pass it, make a three point turn, and parallel-park in front of their house. You straighten out the wheels, thereby ending a typical car trip. Now consider at what level of detail you think of your car's motions at each of these stretches. On the map, your car is a `directed point', and as you mentally move it over the map it behaves like a particle pushed through a tube (the road on the map), taking turns as the tube leads it. When you are actually on the freeway, passing cars, you consider your car as a translational device: the steering moves you sideways relative to the car in front of you, the accelerator moves you forward. Your heading is still determined by the road. During the local trips through the towns A and B, the turning of your car is essential, as it is for

Spatio-Temporal Parameters' Changes in Gait of Male Elderly Subjects

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare spatio-temporal gait parameters between elderly and young male subjects. Methods & Materials: 57 able-bodied elderly (72±5.5 years) and 57 healthy young (25±8.5 years) subjects participated in this study. A four segment model consist of trunk, hip, shank, and foot with 10 reflective markers were used to define lower limbs. Kinematic data c...

Influences of temporal evolution of ground motion frequency content on developed dynamic ratcheting in SDOF systems

Dynamic Ratcheting (DR) is a nonlinear dynamic phenomenon occurring in hysteretic damping systems. It means the structural plastic deformation increases asymmetrically in successive cycles under an earthquake excitation. Although it is generally recognized that DR is closely related to the frequency contents of an earthquake excitation applied to thestructure, no targeted analysis has bee...

PULSATILE MOTION OF BLOOD IN A CIRCULAR TUBE OF VARYING CROSS-SECTION WITH SLIP FLOW

Pulsatile motion of blood in a circular tube of varying cross-section has been developed by considering slip flow at the tube wall and the blood to be a non- Newtonian biviscous incompressible fluid. The tube wall is supposed to be permeable and the fluid exchange across the wall is accounted for by prescribing the normal velocity of the fluid at the tube wall. The tangential velocity of the fl...

Effect of Insulated Up and Down Lid Motion on the Heat Transfer of a Lid-Driven Cavity with an attached fin

This study investigates the effect of lid motion on the optimal characteristics a thin rectangular fin attached on the hot wall of a square lid-driven cavity with active vertical walls. The optimal fin position is studied for Richardson numbers of 0.1-10. The effect of mounting a rectangular fin with a thermal conductivity of 1 and 1000 on minimization and maximization of heat transfer through ...

Derivation of Equation of Motion for the Pillow-Shape Seismic Base Isolation System

Rolling-based seismic isolation systems, in which rollers of circular or non-circular section are used, are less expensive and easier to manufacture. However, this type of isolation suffers from either lack of restoring or re-centering capability, or weakness against uplift forces. To resolve the first shortcoming the use of elliptical as well as pillow-shape rolling parts has been suggested, a...
